Do Grounding
Sheets Work?
I bought grounding sheets expecting a scam. My sleep got better, which made me more suspicious, not less — so I ran three tests to try to catch a placebo. Here's what grounding sheets are, the tests, the numbers, and why I still wouldn't call it proven.
Every test is on camera in the video if you want to see the multimeter and the sleep scores yourself.
What grounding (earthing) is
Grounding is touching the earth directly — barefoot on grass, basically. The theory: the earth carries a negative charge with extra free electrons, your skin conducts electricity, and those electrons may act like antioxidants that calm inflammation. Supporters claim it can improve sleep and lower stress.
I read the studies I could find (I link the ones I used under the video, including a randomized, placebo-controlled sleep study on earthing mats), then tried it the free way: barefoot outside 30 to 60 minutes a day. After about a week, I didn't have the time. That's where the sheets came in.
How grounding sheets work
The fabric has thin conductive fibers woven in (mine are 20% silver). A cord runs from the sheet to the ground port of your wall outlet — the bottom, round hole. That port isn't live; it's the safety path that runs through your house wiring to the earth, so a short goes into the ground instead of through you. The sheet uses that same path. If your house is older, it's worth checking that the outlet is actually grounded before you bother.
Test 1: the blind unplug
A side effect neither of us expected: my wife and I both started having extremely vivid dreams, three nights straight, and only compared notes afterward. So one night I unplugged the sheets without telling her. The next morning, without me asking, she said she hadn't dreamed — so maybe it wasn't the sheets. That's when I told her.
Test 2: is anything actually flowing?
A multimeter sends a tiny charge through one probe and measures the resistance to get back to the other. Air between the probes reads as infinite; a closed path gives a number. I put one probe on the sheet's cord and had someone sitting on the bed hold the other. It read — so current really does pass through skin, sheet, and cord, like they claim. That proves the sheets are connected. It doesn't prove they do anything for you.
Test 3: hotel nights, with a sleep score
Maybe I just sleep well because I'm home. So I took my own bed out of the equation: two nights in the same hotel, one on the grounding sheets (continuity checked first) and one on regular sheets, wearing a Muse S Athena headband that reads brain activity and gives a sleep score.
- Grounding sheets: 85
- Regular sheets: 66
So, do they work?
For me, I sleep better on them, and I notice the difference when I travel. But be honest about what these tests are: one person, one night each, and I knew which night was which. A single night's sleep score swings for a dozen reasons. Test one is one anecdote. Test two only shows the wire works. None of it rules out placebo — it just didn't catch one.
If you want to try them, the pair I use is here on Amazon. Try them a few weeks, keep everything else the same, and judge for yourself. More of what I actually use is on my health page.
