Can You Make Money on Turo
With a $5,000 Car?
Everybody told me not to buy it. Too old, too much maintenance, depreciates too fast, and the loan rate was terrible. I bought it anyway — a 2014 Ford Escape SE with just over 100,000 miles, financed for $5,500 at 12% with a $55 payment every two weeks — and tracked every dollar it made and cost. Two years later, here's the answer.
The whole story is in the video, including the twist at the eight-minute mark that I'm going to spoil below.
Why a $5,000 car is the floor
Turo won't list a vehicle that's more than 12 years old or has more than 130,000 miles. A 2014 Escape at 100k is essentially the cheapest thing the platform will accept. That was the point: if the floor is profitable, everything above it has a chance.
The warnings were real, by the way. This generation of Escape has a known transmission issue, and at six-digit mileage you're in the window for it. I didn't ignore that — I just decided the downside was survivable. Worst case, the car never rents, or gets totaled on trip one, and I'm stuck with a $120-a-month loan. If that's the price of finding out whether I can run my own business, fine.
It booked in 12 hours
Listing is straightforward: VIN, mileage, a set of questions, hit publish. The one thing I'd spend real time or money on is photos, because as a brand-new host you're competing against other 2014 Escapes that already have trips and five-star reviews. Same car, same price, one has reviews — people pick the reviews. So I priced under the market to get bookings first and raised it later.
The first trip came in 12 hours after the listing went live. One day, $32.25. Not much, but the next booking was a 45-day trip that paid $491.10, and after that it just kept renting — all five stars.
Month one: $394 revenue, $106.47 profit
First full month listed: $394 in earnings, $287.53 in expenses (loan, insurance, maintenance, supplies), $106.47 profit — about a 27% margin. Small, but positive from the first month on a car I'd paid nothing down on.
Who rents a $5,000 car? Not tourists looking for a Porsche. People who need to get around and don't want to pay hundreds of dollars a day. Turns out that's a more reliable customer than the alternative.
The part I sat on: I bought this car two years ago
The video is framed like I just bought it. I didn't. The Escape has been on Turo since late 2024 — same car, still listed. The numbers by year:
- 2024 (partial year): $612
- 2025: just over $9,000
- 2026 through June: $8,466 — halfway through the year
The profit margin held in the mid-20s across both years — and that's after paying down the entire loan. I put $0 down. I never paid a cent out of pocket for insurance, the loan, or maintenance. The car covered all of it and paid itself off three and a half years ahead of schedule. I own it outright now, and there's still profit left over.
What happened after
Since that first Escape we've bought eight more cars, an investor owns two more that we manage, and I've been doing this full-time for six months with an office and a small team. The fleet did $19,938 in July 2026. None of that happens if I'd waited for the perfect car or listened to people who weren't living a life I wanted.
What I'd actually tell you
Don't go finance a $50,000 car at 15% for your first one — that's jumping in the deep end with rocks in your pockets. But at some point you have to stop sitting at the top of the diving board listening to people explain how to swim. Pick a cheap, mechanically sound car, cap your downside at a loan payment you could eat, and go. You'll make mistakes. I've made ones that cost thousands. You'll still be further ahead than the people still deciding.
It's not passive, either. You're cleaning cars, checking them in and out, and some renters return them disgusting or smoked-in. Budget time, not just money. My turnover kit for the cheap cars is a super interior cleaner, tire shine, and the smoke smell remover that actually works. Everything else I use is on the car products page.
